The R03 program funds small-scale studies and developmental projects to gather preliminary data needed for applying for larger, investigator-driven research grants like the R01.

This R03 program supports pilot or feasibility studies and developmental research projects with the intention of obtaining sufficient preliminary data for a subsequent investigator-initiated Research Project Grant (R01) or equivalent application.

Additional Eligibility Information
Only New Investigators are eligible to apply as PD/PI for this NIDCR R03. A New Investigator (NI) is defined as an individual who has not previously competed successfully for substantial, independent NIH R01 or R01‑equivalent funding. Proposed research must be relevant to the NIDCR mission. When multiple PDs/PIs are proposed, all PDs/PIs must meet the NI definition. PD(s)/PI(s) must have NI status at the time of award.
