The OIA grant is designed to fund an investigator's entire research program, rather than specific projects, for up to seven years. It is likely to be the main or only source of NHLBI funding for individual awards. This grant allows researchers to explore new or expanded scientific directions and encourages taking greater risks and conducting long-term research, as long as it aligns with the NHLBI's mission.
