The following categories of applicants are invited to apply:

  • Only NINDS (NIH Intramural Program) — may apply for the initial mentored (intramural) K22 phase on behalf of intramural neurologists or neurosurgeons
  • Public/State-Controlled Institutions of Higher Education — eligible as extramural host institutions only; must be U.S.-based and affiliated with a medical school
  • Private Institutions of Higher Education — eligible as extramural host institutions only; must be U.S.-based and affiliated with a medical school
  • Nonprofits Other Than Institutions of Higher Education — with 501(c)(3) status; eligible as extramural host institutions only; must be U.S.-based and affiliated with a medical school
  • Nonprofits Other Than Institutions of Higher Education — without 501(c)(3) status; eligible as extramural host institutions only; must be U.S.-based and affiliated with a medical school
  • For-Profit Organizations (Other than Small Businesses) — eligible as extramural host institutions only; must be U.S.-based and affiliated with a medical school
  • Small Businesses — eligible as extramural host institutions only; must be U.S.-based and affiliated with a medical school
  • U.S. Territory or Possession Organizations — eligible consistent with above categories (U.S.-based); extramural host must be affiliated with a medical school
  • Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government — only NINDS is eligible for the initial mentored phase; federal agencies are not eligible as extramural host institutions
  • State Governments — listed as eligible organizations; however extramural phase host must be an institution affiliated with a medical school
  • County Governments — listed as eligible organizations; however extramural phase host must be an institution affiliated with a medical school
  • City or Township Governments — listed as eligible organizations; however extramural phase host must be an institution affiliated with a medical school
  • Special District Governments — listed as eligible organizations; however extramural phase host must be an institution affiliated with a medical school
  • Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Federally Recognized) — listed as eligible organizations; however extramural phase host must be an institution affiliated with a medical school
  • Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized) — listed as eligible organizations; however extramural phase host must be an institution affiliated with a medical school
Additional Eligibility Information
Key restrictions and requirements: • Initial mentored (intramural) phase applicant: Only NINDS may apply on behalf of intramural neurologists or neurosurgeons. NINDS is not eligible to apply for the extramural phase. • Extramural phase host institutions: Must be U.S.-based and either (a) public or private institutions of higher education, or (b) for-profit or non-profit institutions that are affiliated with a medical school.
