  • Program: NSF CBET Biophotonics (within the Engineering Biology and Health cluster).

  • Purpose: Fund fundamental engineering research in photonics that enables new, low-cost, minimally invasive diagnostics and therapies for medicine, biology, and biotechnology. Emphasis is on breakthroughs beyond mature/ready-to-apply technologies.

  • Example research areas:

  • Deep-tissue imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm).
