The NIDCR is seeking research on the diverse microorganisms in the mouth, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea, and protozoa. The goal is to study how these different microorganisms interact with each other in realistic conditions, and how these interactions help maintain oral health or lead to disease.
