The National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program (NPS ABPP) offers Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants (BLAG) to help preserve Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War battlefields. These grants are available to state and local governments, Tribes, and nonprofit organizations for acquiring land or interests in land for preservation purposes. The following categories of applicants are invited to apply:

  • State governments
  • Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • Native American tribal organizations (other than Federally recognized tribal governments)
  • Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
  • County governments
  • Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
  • City or township governments
Additional Eligibility Information
Eligible Sites: Eligible battlefields: (1) have been assigned a battlefield or "survey" code in the Survey Reports; (2) are located on American soil, or within the boundaries of the United States; and (3) located outside the exterior boundaries of a unit of the National Park System. Eligible acquisitions should lie at least 50% within the battlefield boundaries of sites identified in the Survey Reports.
