The Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions are designed to help small and mid-sized organizations enhance their capability to preserve and manage their humanities collections. The program particularly welcomes applications from institutions that have not previously received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).
The Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions help small and mid-sized institutions improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. The program encourages applications from small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant.

- Special district governments
- Public and State controlled institutions of higher education
- County governments
- State governments
- City or township governments
- Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized)
- Private institutions of higher education
- Nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
